Twittering Twitterers & other Wild Observers

November 13th, 2008 - Outdoors, Technology - No Comments

I wrote http://wildobs.com with support for numerous Atom feeds (e.g.  http://wildobs.com/adam_jack.atom) because they just make sense; folks can query into a database for things that interest them, and access the information when they want it. Customized notifications w/o the interruptions.
Funny thing is … I know of so few people who actually read feeds. Even techies, many just […]

Prescription distraction

October 28th, 2008 - Firefighting, Outdoors - No Comments

Friday I took a day off from computers to participate in a controlled burn. I learned a lot, I worked hard, and I had some fun with some good people. That is me, in the middle of this crew.
Folks talk about firefighters liking to burn things, liking fire (perhaps a little too much.) I don’t […]

Elk celebrating the fall colors

October 22nd, 2008 - Colorado, Outdoors, Planet Earth - No Comments

The elk seems to be avoiding some weather down at the bottom of the canyon. Enjoy them, and the colors.

Office view

September 22nd, 2008 - Outdoors, Work - No Comments

This is the view from my sometimes office…this is the office…I was just taking these photos, thinking that this was the perfect place to work on a good weather day, and then my poor dog got attacked by wasps. Somehow he must have stepped on a nest or something, but suddenly there were ten or […]

Up at altitude for fall

September 7th, 2008 - Colorado, Outdoors - No Comments

Last weekend I had the pleasure of being up at 12K feet above sea level at Weston Pass, near Leadville (the 2 mile high “city”). I cannot describe how amazing are the feelings from fresh fall mornings and cool evenings in Colorado’s mountains, but trust me, get out there if you can. (Perhaps another day I’ll […]

Welcome Hummers of 2008

April 14th, 2008 - Colorado, Outdoors - No Comments

The hummers (scouts at least) are back. April 14th (one day before their normal April 15th arrival, but hey — so they don’t respect leap years, that’s allowed. )Make sure you don’t miss out on the pleasure of these feisty critters by cleaning your feeder, ready for the coming season. This snap was taken […]

Getting started smelling roses…

Dogs (and meat) … all beat!

February 13th, 2008 - Colorado, Health, Outdoors - No Comments

Today was the Mule Deer Trail in Golden Gate State Park. Forget what the map/guide says about difficulty, these trail classifications are (I assume) for summer hikes, not snowshoe hikes. Today’s “moderate” (from Gap Road to Frazer Meadow) was far more strenuous than yesterday’s ”difficult”. Long stretches of feet deep snow, thigh-high drifts, long/steep rises, ups and downs. Whew, […]

Stepping out…

February 12th, 2008 - Colorado, Health, Outdoors, Planet Earth - 1 Comment

Today is the first day of the start of my uncertainty…
The good folks at Adventure Central gave me these awesome snowshoes as a leaving present, and today I put them to the test on the Snowshow Hare Trail of Golden Gate State Park.
Fully dressed for the weather, backpacked up, and in steady snow with two impatient dogs, the quick-tighten […]
